Created: 2025-12-16Updated: 2025-12-16

What an operating system actually is: the layer between hardware and applications, the interrupts it runs on, and the hardware keeping user code contained.

components: hardware, OS, app, users
- hardware: provide basic computing resources
- OS: controls and coordinates the use of hardware/resources among apps
- app: solve the computing problems
OS
- permanent software, such as abstract of hardware for app to use
- Resource allocator: manage and allocate resources to insure efficiency and fairness
- Control program: controls execution of programs and operation of I/O devices to prevent errors
- Kernel: the one program running at all times (in supervisor mode)
Goals: Convenience and Efficiency -- contradictory

the only interface between user app and hardware
